LAUSD South Math Field Day

Students from across south Los Angeles game together at White Middle School for a day of Fun. Students and teachers visited us to learn to Fly a Cessna 172 over Loas Angeles. There is a profound amount of math and science in aviation. Algebra, Physics, Trigonometry, Geometry and more. Think about it!

A Visit to Girls Academic Leadership Academy

Liz Hicks, the Principal at GALA, was our first installation in Los Angeles. Now 10 years later the simulators are still performing as the day they were delivered. Young women from the greater Los Angeles area apply to be accepted at GALA. The school has just moved to a new BEAUTIFUL campus in south LA. Congratulations to all of Liz’s team for lighting the path to great careers for your women.

North Clayton High School Aviation Lab Looks GREAT

Students at North Clayton HS in Atlanta have a world class lab to learn in. The Lab features 4 Edustation Pro’s and 2 Pilot Pro 2i’s flight simulators supported by curriculum and lesson plans. Students will create flight plans and fly them anywhere in the world in over 100 aircraft. So GREAT

Los Angeles Superintendent Carvalho Visits BALA to see Collaborative Learning in Action

STEMPilot has installed two “pilot programs” in the Los Angeles Unified Schools. These Aviation Labs in have now demonstrated how learning to fly builds problem solving skills and promotes collaborative learning. Superintendents Alberto M. Carvalho and Andre Spicer saw this first hand last Friday in the BALA Aviation Lab. More of these labs are coming to LAUSD schools. Thanks the Principal Samuels and Mr Bolder in the classroom where the curriculum draws students into this learning space.

Hands-On STEM Learning Takes Flight at BALA

The STEMPilot team recently visited BALA to lead 7th and 8th grade students through an interactive aviation STEM lesson that combined math, problem-solving, and real-world application. Students began by planning a flight, calculating distance, speed, and time to reach their destination. They then took those plans into action by flying the routes on STEMPilot flight simulators, experiencing firsthand how classroom concepts translate into real aviation scenarios.

The session gave students an engaging, hands-on way to apply math and critical thinking skills while exploring aviation and STEM pathways. We were also glad to have Los Angeles Unified School District STEAM Coordinator Kristine join us for a class during the visit.

Thank you to the students and educators at BALA for a great day of learning — we loved seeing the focus, curiosity, and excitement in the classroom.

STEMPilot Launches New After-School Aviation Lab to Teach Students Principles of Flight

STEMPilot is proud to announce the launch of its new STEMPilot Afterschool Aviation Lab, a program designed to get classes of 20 students excited about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) by teaching them to fly. The program uses hands-on flight simulator training to reinforce classroom lessons on science, engineering, and math. The objective is to improve critical thinking and problem solving skills to improve standardized test results and attendance.

The curriculum is structured into 15 two-hour sessions, with the first hour dedicated to academic content and the second hour flying the simulators. Easy to follow lessons each begin with a video on the subject, what we call Visual Learning First Education^tm, supported with the use of Phonics to help learning terms, No Memorizing here. Classroom handouts you print are included for each lesson.

Students form into Flight Crews of 2 or 3 for all activities to promote collaborative learning. The program’s avatar, Skyler, guides the students through the lessons.

Lesson plans cover a wide range of topics, including:

The Four Forces of Flight: Students learn about the forces of flight—lift, thrust, gravity /weight, and drag. The program explains that lift, generated by the wings, overcomes the weight and gravity holding the plane on the ground. Thrust, created by the propeller, overcomes the resistance of air, known as drag.
Flight Instruments: Students are introduced to the six primary flight instruments, also known as the “6 pack”. These include the Air Speed Indicator, Artificial Horizon, Altimeter, Turn Coordinator, Directional Gyro, and Vertical Speed Indicator.
Takeoffs and Landings: The curriculum provides detailed procedures for safe takeoffs and landings. Students learn to use the rudder pedals to steer the plane on the ground and achieve a rotation speed (Vr) of 60 knots for takeoff. For landing, they learn about using flaps to fly at lower speeds and the importance of monitoring air speed and glide slope with PAPI lights.
Navigation and Flight Planning: Students learn to use instruments like the Directional Gyro and a stopwatch to follow a flight plan. They also learn how to calculate flight time, fuel consumption, and weight for each leg of a trip using classroom math.

The STEMPilot Afterschool Aviation Lab is designed for up to 20 students, working and flying together in Flight Crews, emphasizing a collaborative learning environment to help each other succeed.

Upon completion of the program, students earn a Certificate of Achievement.
