At the conference, we highlighted our newest initiative — the After School Aviation Lab Program — designed specifically for CT After School Programs. Carlthorp School, located in Santa Monica, California, is already home to four STEMPILOT Edustation Pro simulators, giving students the opportunity to step into the pilot’s seat and apply real-world STEM concepts through the excitement of flight. The connection between STEMPILOT and Carlthorp began in a serendipitous way. A Carlthorp parent attended the Spirit of Santa Monica’s Douglas Day, where STEMPILOT showcased its aviation-based learning systems to families and community members. Impressed by the impact the simulators had on students at the event, that parent envisioned bringing the same experience to Carlthorp.

With their help, the school acquired multiple Edustation Pro simulators, officially launching a STEM Lab powered by aviation—a space where students can explore physics, engineering, and aerodynamics in a hands-on, immersive way.

Girls in Aviation Day – 10 Years of Inspiring the Next Generation

The Connecticut Chapter of Women in Aviation marked its 10th year of Girls in Aviation Day, and the experience continues to grow bigger and better each time. This year’s event featured:

One highlight of the day came when we reconnected with a student from John Wallace Middle School, one of our partner schools. She was excited to practice a specific flight pattern she’s looking forward to flying this upcoming school year. She seized the opportunity, and we’re proud to say she pulled off the best takeoff and landing of the entire day!

Thanks to our Grade A STEMPILOT tech support, a quick on-site fix ensured everyone could enjoy the simulators without a hitch. It’s just another reminder that being part of the STEMPILOT family means having reliable support every step of the way.

We loved reconnecting with frequent flyers, welcoming new ones, and enjoying the thrill of takeoffs happening right outside the hangar.

Meanwhile, on the West Coast, STEMPILOT joined the Spirit of Santa Monica for Douglas Day, honoring the legendary Douglas Aircraft legacy while celebrating flight in the community.

From open to close, students of all ages lined up to experience our simulators—proving once again that hands-on STEM learning through flight is truly universal.

Our owner, Jay LeBoff, and his daughter, Ariel Barhartt-Leboff, spent the day immersed in the excitement, sharing the joy of aviation with new friends and old. They left the event energized and eager to return again and again.

Why Girls in Aviation Day Matters – From Shahara’s Cockpit

Shahara’s story is anything but linear, yet to her it has always felt adjacent enough to aviation that each step prepared her for the next. Starting her career as a STEM teacher, she worked hands-on with students, helping them explore science, math, and technology. Even now, she continues substitute teaching—because she believes education is foundational. It’s what first seeded her belief that aviation doesn’t begin only in the cockpit, but in classrooms.

Her shift to being a flight attendant with Avelo Airlines, based in New Haven, opened new doors. Being in aviation every day — seeing planes, interacting with pilots and crew — she discovered a deeper, growing passion. But what crystallized everything was meeting Captain Catherine Hiwot one of the few Black female captains at Avelo at the time. Shahara says that seeing Captain Hiwot’s example made her realize: “you can’t be what you can’t see.” That realization pushed her to begin pilot training.

Now, as Outreach Chair for WAI-CT, Shahara’s focus is ensuring that Girls in Aviation Day isn’t just a fun, inspiring gathering, but a launching pad. A place where young women who may never otherwise see pathways into aviation feel welcomed, represented, and equipped with real resources and encouragement.

The Women in Aviation Connecticut Chapter (WAI-CT) works locally to support and advance women in all aviation career fields. Their goals include:

This week, STEMPILOT visited BALA for an on-site professional development session with their teaching team. Our focus was Supporting Educators so they feel confident and equipped to lead the After School Aviation Lab curriculum effectively.

During the training, we:

• Provided hands-on practice with the aviation lab’s flight simulators, showing teachers how to integrate them into lessons.
