As summer winds down and a new school year approaches, we’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be attending the Wings Over Camarillo Airshow once again. Every year, we travel to amazing airshows and conferences to share our passion for aviation and engineering with our Edustation Pro. But Wings Over Camarillo is a standout—an unforgettable event filled with breathtaking aerial displays, a diverse collection of aircraft for families to explore, and even a car show for the gearheads. It’s truly a can’t-miss experience.

About the Camarillo Airshow

Wings Over Camarillo began as a humble event 44 years ago, but it has since taken flight as one of the Central Coast’s premier airshows. Each year, this event dedicates itself to celebrating aviation history. From the STEM Pavilion to the Veterans Booth, families are taken on a journey through time, with every part of the show honoring the past in style.

Families are also given the opportunity to witness heart stopping airshows from pilots like Aaron Fitzgerald – Red Bull Helicopter and more. But that’s not all. Families will also be able to see and take pictures of different aircrafts up close and meet the pilots behind the cockpit. Not a fan of planes? That’s okay. The Wings Over Camarillo Airshow also features a small car show where children can watch the Wings Over Camarillo Classic Car Show and learning more about the different cars present.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The STEM Pavilion buzzes with a variety of STEM activities each year, all designed to inspire the next generation in aviation. Along with the local EEA chapter and other exhibitors, STEMPilot is happy to announce that we will be continuing our partnership with the Wings Over Camarillo Airshow in inspiring youth in aviation and STEM based careers. Our Edustation Pro offers youth the chance to fly a virtual Cessna 172 around the airport using Prepar3D. STEMPilot’s flight simulators give young learners a chance to master the fundamentals of flight with hands-on guidance from our very own founder and CEO, Jay LeBoff and California sales representative Justin Oseo.

But that’s not all! Young aviators also get the chance to learn the basics of drone piloting with our SAFEDrone software. They can fly a digital drone through the skies in our training missions. “As technology grows and advances, new career opportunities are bring made in STEM. It’s important for youth to realize that they don’t have to fly a plane in order to be a pilot and many industries are creating new job opportunities for drone pilots and drone engineers. That’s why STEMPilot created our drone programs—to educate youth about drone technology and inspire the newt programmer, drone engineer or drone pilot,” comments Kerri, STEMPilot’s administrative assistant/ sales and customer relations representative.

We’re thrilled to be invited back to Wings Over Camarillo’s STEM Pavilion this year where we will join many other fellow aviator and STEM vendors. The event will run from August 16th-17th, 7 AM – 5 PM. For tickets and directions, check out the Wings Over Camarillo Airshow website.

William S. Hart Union School District welcomed its first SAFEDrone 10 Classroom kit back in May 2023. This kit will be used to educate students on the different careers in aviation and STEM by the school’s very own STEM and Engineering teacher, Miguel Cruz.

Miguel Cruz has 20 years of experience in aviation and aerospace, where he started his aerospace career in the army. He was later inspired by his wife to go back to school and get his degree in aeronautics from Embry-Riddle University.

After many discussions between him and his wife about education and how competitive the workforce is, he went on to investigate what schools are doing to prepare youth for careers. He later decided to join the education field at Canoga Park High School. Here he would later create and run their engineering program.

As time went on, Miguel taught his students what it was like in the workforce by using everyday real-world group projects that would test the knowledge of his students. However, his school would later receive a grant that would allow him to purchase several flight simulators from STEMPilot. Miguel Cruz would later inspire STEMPilot’s very own SAFEDrone Classroom kits. Miguel would later purchase and bring SAFEDrone to William S. Hart Union School District.

“Just the sight of a drone in the classroom… creates a sense of wanting to be in this class.” The SAFEDrone 10 Classroom kit will be used as part of his Drone Club where the students will learn the basic understanding of how a drone works and operates in the safety of the classroom.

STEMPilot has been manufacturing and selling simulators since 2005 to schools and youth programs nationwide. STEMPilot’s mission is to engage students in STEM with flight simulation.

San Miguel Academy has been giving students a chance to thrive and learn in a safe and positive environment for 18 years, serving low-opportunity students and their families in the city of Newburgh, NY. San Miguel’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty through education.

Background

San Miguel Academy first started as an idea by Father Mark Connell and several of his friends. They saw there was high crime and violence in Newburgh, NY, and low graduation rates among at-risk youth. After many months of planning and securing funding, San Miguel Academy (SMA) opened in 2006 as an independent school for low-opportunity students in grades 5th-8th.

San Miguel also makes a 12-year commitment to each student and their family, which is integral to changing the trajectory of their students’ lives. San Miguel is 100% scholarship driven. After graduating from SMA, students are givent the opportunity to join San Miguel’s Graduate Success Program. The program supports students through high school and in pursuing the post-secondary path that’s right for them. Their Graduate Success Program includes preparing their students to enter college, trade school, and the military.

Incorporating flight in STEAM

The development of career-ready skills for the 21st-century marketplace is at the core of the San Miguel Academy Project and Place-Based Learning curriculum. In 2022, SMA (San Miguel Academy) purchased a Pilot Pro 3 flight simulator from STEMPilot. Their flight simulator is considered one of the focal points of their newly renovated STEAM Learning Center. The STEMPilot program at San Miguel develops STEAM skills and introduces students to multiple STEAM-related careers including engineering, coding, business, and aviation. They are fortunate to have American Airlines Captain David Terwilliger, Major, U.S.A.F. Retired, teaching the program.

We are thrilled to be part of the San Miguel Academy family as they build future leaders and pilots. STEMPilot has been providing resources and materials for educators since 2005. STEMPilot’s mission is to engage students in STEM through simulation with the main focus of flight.
